Living
Faithfully with Disappointment
in the Church
by J. Lebron McBride
“Why should we even bother with the
church?It causes so much
heartache and has so many problems.” As a minister and as a counselor
I have heard numerous stories of disappointment with the church. In
addition, I have had my own periods of disappointment, but in the final
analysis I have remained active and loyal to the church. This book is
honest and open and would be excellent for a small study group. I have
included study questions at the end of each chapter. This work is also
a lay version of some of the chapters in my first book with some new
material added.
The
People's New Testament Commentary by M. Eugene Boring
and Fred B. Craddock
At Dr. Craddock's fall preaching workshop, he announced
that he and Dr. Boring had teamed up to offer a fresh
one-volume commentary on the New Testament appropriate
for both lay and clergy alike. The reviews so far have
been stunning, as one might expect. It's over 800 pages
long, so we know it's comprehensive. It's written by Dr.
Craddock, so we know it's readable, useable, and filled
with insight.

Gloom and Glory : First Lesson Sermons for Advent / Christmas /
Epiphany, Cycle A by R. Glen Miles, Sandy Springs Christian Church
It is always gratifying to come across a book by an
Emmanuel graduate. This one Glen sent me to write some remarks for
the cover, and I read it with pleasure and satisfaction. It is a book of
sermons on the Old Testament texts chosen as lectionary readings for
Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, Cycle A.
These sermons connect at the two vital connecting points for sermons:
the hearers and the scripture texts. One cannot read them as abstract
essays. They are obviously prepared, as is all good preaching,
with a specific congregation in mind. The deep pastoral concern of the
preacher comes through clearly, as does the easy and often humorous
rapport between preacher and congregation.
With reference to the text, Glen refuses to take the easy ways, which
too many preachers follow-the ways of moralizing or using Old Testament
personalities as examples for today's believer. Those homiletical moves
are too superficial. These sermons, however, invite the hearer to
grapple with real difficulties in the texts, and by doing so they
present the God who is the primary mover in every text. In addition, the
New Testament texts, which are brought into the discussion, seem to be
natural moves from the deep understanding of the more ancient passages.
In short, these sermons make easy reading, but offer no simple
solutions. They bring us (reader as well as hearer) up against texts
that lead us to an encounter with God and a commission to life. I highly
recommend them as models of excellent Christian preaching from Old
Testament texts. Reviewed by Dr. Bruce E. Shields, DMin Director, Professor of

Spiritual
Crisis : Surviving Trauma to the Soul
by J. Lebron McBride
J. LeBron McBride, PhD, MPH is
Senior Minister at First Christian Church of Rome, Ga. and also the
Director of Behavioral Medicine
Family Practice Residency Program of Floyd Medical Center.
Often in crisis counseling we deal with the emotional and psychological,
but ignore the spiritual. The book is primarily for clergy persons and
counselors. However, thoughtful and reflective lay persons may find it
stimulating as well. It is well referenced and has several diagrams to
illustrate concepts.

Myspace
to Sacred Space: God for a New Generation by Christian & Amy Piatt
My wife and I have just
finished reading Christian and Amy Piatt's book MySpace
to Sacred Space. While both of us have read more books
on church growth than we can remember (my wife is a
pastor), we have rarely come away from any of them as
charged and excited about the possibilities for church
in the 21st century as we did with this one. Far from
being yet another program for growth, MySpace to Sacred
Space focuses on the much more ancient and important
task of building community. Christian and Amy weave
personal stories, experiences, and insights together to
illustrate the power of story and community in the life
of the church. Whether my wife and I find ourselves
planting new churches or helping older congregations
revitalize, I am confident that the ideas of MySpace to
Sacred Space will be with us for a long time. [Ed.
