Camp Christian Gala and Auction!

One hundred and thirty-five loyal supporters of Camp Christian Conference Center flocked to Camp at 11am on Saturday, March 16, 2013 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the camp.  It was a gorgeous spring day and attendees enjoyed sitting on Woodland Lodge or Peachtree Lodge porches, enjoying the view of the lake and each others company as they gathered for the Gala.  But soon the voice of auctioneer Wilbur Mull could be heard calling everyone to enjoy appetizers and place their bids in the silent auction.  The array of items donated for the auction were varied and amazing.  Paintings, silver services, crafts, gift baskets, jewelry and much more FILLED Peachtree Lodge and it's porch.  In addition, the porch contained a bucket auction - guests bought tickets and placed them in small buckets next to each item in the hopes of winning that item in a drawing.

At 12:30 everyone moved into Lavery Hall to be led in a camp "singing blessing" by Bob Clarke.  Everyone was served a delicious lunch by the members of the Youth Activities Council (YAC).  An amazing salad was followed by roast pork, green beans, twice baked potatoes and tea.  Desert consisted of traditional camp favorites peach cobbler, coconut or Coca-Cola cake.  Bob Clarke and Don Brewer gave an interesting presentation on the beginning of Camp Christian.  As lunch ended, Wilbur Mull assisted by Karen Frank-Plumlee, Dave Phlegar, Bob Grant and Rod Baker, began the live auction.  Bidding on most items was lively as Wilbur kept everything moving with humor and the skill of a seasoned auctioneer.  He actually sold one item TWICE!  For a full list of all the auction items, the lunch menu and much more, take a look at the 2013 Gala Program Book which you can download below.

After the event, Karen Frank-Plumlee, Co-Interim Regional Minister marveled at what a good time everyone seemed to have had and commented, "This could not have happened without everyone who came, those who donated items for the auction and those who bid on them. A special thanks goes to Marilyn Parks who coordinated the GALA; our chefs, Jim and Marilyn Torbert and their helpers, our auctioneer, Wilbur Mull; our regional administrative assistant/bookkeeper, Pam Van Dusen; the GALA committee and other volunteers; the GALA Ambassadors and the Youth Activities Council (YAC)."
