BIO:
Rev.
William L. (Bill) Lee was the 2005-2007 Moderator of the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ).
Lee is pastor of Loudon Avenue Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) in Roanoke, Va., where he has served for nearly 30
years. He also works as an Alternative Dispute Resolution Mediator and
Facilitator with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center
in Salem, Va.
In Roanoke, Lee has made prodigious strides against
the barriers of race, religion and socioeconomic status. He uses his
many talents to provide a voice for members of his community that often
go unheard. On a number of occasions, he has served city government by
imparting an understanding of the area's diverse citizenry to local
legislators.
He also has created a model of health ministry at his
church. Over the years, Loudon Avenue has created a parish nursing
program that provides health education and screening to church and
community members; a Faith in Action project, to help guide seniors
through an array of medical and social services; and a nonprofit health
clinic that provides primary care to the poor and uninsured in medically
under-served areas of Roanoke.
Lee began his career in 1974 as a teacher in Roanoke
City's public schools. Though he left this position a year later to
pursue a master of divinity degree, his commitment to area youth has
never diminished. He is past president of the William Fleming High
School Parent and Teacher Association, has helped improve both middle
and senior high athletic programs in local schools, and is often called
upon to speak at student assemblies. As a Christian minister, he has
shown personal initiative in his focus on the quality of life for
Roanoke's youth.
In addition to health and education, Lee's ministry
has helped those at Loudon Avenue Christian Church reach beyond their
own denomination to involvement with fellow ministries, as well as
neighborhood and civic organization. Lee also has been involved with the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes for nearly two decades.
Lee serves on the board of directors for Blue Ridge
Community Services, Roanoke Area Ministers, the Congregational Nursing
Program, (Carilion Health Systems), and Good Samaritan Hospice. He is a
member of the Roanoke City school board's long range planning committee,
Roanoke City public schools budget advisory committee and the Roanoke
City cultural service committee. He also is a charter member of the
Roanoke Neighborhood Partnership.
Lee holds a master's degree in theology from Duke
University Divinity School in Durham, N.C., and a bachelor's degree in
special education from Virginia State College in Petersburg, Va. |
