NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Southside Good Friday Services Cancelled

After careful consideration, Southside Good Friday services scheduled for April has been cancelled. It is our hope and prayer that everyone stays safe during this time.

Special Prayers with General Ministry President

Pastors and chaplains –

Unprecedented. Historic. Weird. All these adjectives describe this current COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting upheaval in our ways of being Church.

One thing that is unchanging is the gift of prayer. Our General Minister and President Terri Hord Owens would like to pray over you virtually as you prepare for another Sunday of physical separation.

Calls have been scheduled for the next three Fridays at 1:00 pm EDT (noon CDT, 10:00 am PDT). The links to each session are on buttons below. The call will be about 15 minutes in length.

Even if you cannot join the conference call, know you are in her prayers. We know that technology may be something that is causing stress. We know you are worried about folks in your congregations and communities, particularly the vulnerable who may have already been ill and isolated.

There is only capacity for 100. Please make room for those in pastoral ministry and refrain from joining if you are not a chaplain or pastoring a congregation. If there is overwhelming participation, we will make additional plans for future calls.

Regional Assembly Postponed until Nov 13-14th

After careful consideration, the Regional Assembly Planning Team and Regional Staff have elected to reschedule the event. It is our hope and prayer that we are able to convene during a time that it will not put our congregations and clergy at risk. See the informational buttons on the right for more information and resources related to the Covid-19 Coronavirus and the need for virtual services and cancelling of gatherings.

Volunteers Needed - El Refugio

We at El Refugio need volunteers to help staff our hospitality house to assist people released from Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, GA. Recent efforts to increase legal access at Stewart mean more people are being released on bond and parole. The detention center offers those released a ride to the closest bus station in Columbus, GA -- about one hour away. However, some people may not be ready to immediately travel.

El Refugio will offer assistance from the moment immigrants and asylum-seekers are released from Stewart. We will provide a crucial service, giving people time to relax and prepare for what can be a very long journey to join family members, friends, or sponsors across the United States. We will provide meals, as well as items such as a backpack, clothing, and hygiene supplies. We can’t wait to get started -- but our program won’t be successful without help from our dedicated volunteers.

See the attached for more details. To apply, please visit our Google Form. Please contact us at post-release@elrefugioministry.org if you would like more information.

Week of Compassion - Puerto Rico & Australia

We received the news today that there was another earthquake in Puerto Rico. Week of Compassion is in ongoing conversation with churches and ecumenical partners about current needs and the best way the wider church can help. We are also in conversation with local partners in Australia concerning the worst fire season in living history. Please keep them in your prayers. To support Puerto Rico designate your gift for "Earthquakes". Concerning Australia, designate your gift for "Australia Fires" ( click the button below to see attached letter).
