Report and Photos from the Assembly

WelcomeThe 168th Regional Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Georgia was a blessing to all who attended.  The city of Columbus is a beautiful, warm and entertaining place to have a gathering with restaurants, shopping, a stunning river walk, museums, and adventure such as the zip line across the river.  The hosts from First Christian Church Columbus were right on top of everything.  And the Columbus Convention and Trade Center - built in a refurbished Iron Works was a beautiful and efficient location.

Friday Night Worship was themed "Thrive" and included welcomes from the Moderator Bob Grant, the local host FCC Columbus, the Pastoral Institute, and our Division of Overseas Missions Partner Revs. Melanie and Frank who were with us.  The service also featured messages from some of the best preachers in the region: Minister Angela Whitenhill, Rev. Hebert Mallqui, The Rev. Jarrod Longbons, and The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Hale.  A children's moment by Mariah McClendon and Special Music by Rev. Nick Chambers added to worship.  And of course, the service ended in Communion.

Saturday Morning began with the business session which saw the election of a new slate of officers for the next 2 years.  The budget was presented and approved.  A major segment of business involved the presentation of an emergency Sense of the Assembly Resolution in support of the Poor Peoples Campaign which passed unanimously.

Saturday Morning continued with workshops listed below which were well attended and informative.  Between workshops attendees browsed at the many tables and booths in the exhibit area.

Burning Camp MortgageSaturday Buffett lunch was a choice of baked chicken or beef tips over rice with green beans, mashed potatoes and some excellent cobbler or cake.

The closing worship included a mass choir made up of singers from churches across Georgia and directed by Ann Edmondson of First Atlanta.  Our Sermon was delivered by Rev. Terrie Hord Owens (see below) who commented how inspired she was with our L.I.F.T. initiative and preached on Acts 2:1-4.  We had special music from a group of Girl Scouts from Columbus Central Christian Church!  New officers and Regional Elders were also installed.

But the highlight of the worship, and perhaps of the Assembly, was the burning of the Camp Mortgage (photo at right)!!!  Camp is now Debt Free and those interest and principal payments can now go to maintenance and programming.

The Closing worship ended in Communion with different types of bread on each table to remind us of our diversity.
