Workshop for Elders
In Atlanta-Metro Area
Lexington
Theological Seminary will offer a workshop for elders at
Chestnut Ridge Christian Church,
Marietta, Sunday, April 6, 2008, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Dr.
Jerry Sumney, professor of Biblical Studies at LTS, will be the resource
leader for the workshop. The workshop will focus on the role of elders.
Sumney notes, “Disciples today are uncertain about what roles elders
have in our churches. It often seems that they do little more than pray
at the Lord’s Table, but that seems unsatisfactory. While we often hear
they are to be “spiritual leaders,” most of us remain unclear about what
that means.
To gain some clarity about what it means to be an elder, we will
survey how elders have been viewed throughout the history of the
Stone-Campbell movement. We will see that our uncertainty about their
roles has been influenced by our decisions about governance structures
for our churches. We will discuss the eldership as a form of ministry
and think together about how elders can truly become spiritual leaders
in their churches in ways that strengthen the church and support its
ministries.” JERRY L. SUMNEY, professor of Biblical Studies, is a graduate of
David Lipscomb University. He earned an M.A. from Harding University in
1982, and a Ph.D. from Southern Methodist University in 1987. Dr.
Sumney was born in Indiana and grew up in Central Florida. He taught in
the religion department at Ferrum College from 1986-1997 and joined the
LTS faculty in 1997.
Professor Sumney is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature
and has served as president of the Southeastern Region of the Society.
At the national and international level, he has served as the chair of
the steering committee for multiple groups studying Pauline letters.
He has written four books: Identifying Paul's Opponents; Servants
of Satan, False Brothers, and Other Pauline Opponents; Preaching
Apocalyptic Texts (co-authored with Larry Paul Jones); and
Philippians: A Greek Student’s Intermediate Reader. He is co-editor
of Theology and Ethics in Paul and His Interpreters and Paul
and Pathos. He has a commentary on Colossians that will be published
in the fall of 2008.
