First Christian Church of Athens would
greatly appreciate the aid of other Disciples' churches as we are
seeking out individuals and couples who are interested in, in the
process of, or having already completed international adoption(s). Below
is the general idea for the creation of the AGAPE group and we would
covet your ability to share this news with your congregation.
AGAPE – “Athens, Georgia Adopting Parents
of children throughout the Earth”
AGAPE is a group of people of faith that are interested in adopting
children internationally, in the process of adoption, or those that have
already gone through the process of adoption, to come together. As a
community we will share in educating one another about the processes and
expectations, share our experiences – our hopes and our struggles – and
create a community of people who understand that the image of family
takes on many shapes and forms.
Although the use of this acronym is highly suspicious, the name AGAPE
is the perfect representation of the love that unites us all as God’s
children and the love that we believe is necessary for family and
community. Elements of justice, grace, peace, beauty, and even sacrifice
compose agape. As adults interested in adopting children beyond the
borders of this country, we journey together on a path that is filled
with these elements and more. Justice for the children, orphanages, and
the families from which they come; grace for us as soon-to-be parents;
peace for the perfection of each child; beauty that is in family and
community; and the sacrifice required to endure the trials and
frustrations of the process.
