Join us in the sanctuary of First Christian Church Atlanta (FCCA) as we remember September 11, 2001. You are invited to set aside time for quiet retreat this day in order to reflect, pray, honor those who died, and ponder in silent prayer. We welcome you to contemplate the themes of loss, grief, anger, reconciliation, forgiveness, and peace that this tragedy continues to evoke in us.
This quiet, half-day event will feature brief remembrances and commentaries at the beginning of each hour.

10 AM: Welcome, Opening Prayer, and Poetry Reading with Rev. Phil Foster, Associate Minister for Spiritual Development, FCCA

11 AM: “Cows For America” storytelling with Rev. Kris Branaman, Senior Co-Pastor, FCCA

12 PM: Reflections with author Carl McColman

1PM: Closing Prayer Circle with Rev. Foster

The hourly reflections will be followed by silent time for meditation and prayer. Stations for reflection and prayer will be located through out the sanctuary.

You may attend all or part of the half-day quiet retreat. ALL faiths are welcome. For further information, please contact Rev. Kris Branaman (770-939-4358) or Rev. Phil Foster (404-314-8325). We look forward in creating and sharing this sacred space with you.

The Annual Spirituality Conference

First Christian Church Atlanta
4532 LaVista Road, Tucker, Georgia 30084
Friday, October 1 through Sunday, October 3, 2010

Featured Presenter: Carl McColman, author of The Big Book of Christian Mysticism: The Essential Guide to Contemplative Spirituality. He is also a popular blogger who writes about Christian spirituality and mysticism at www.anamchara.com.

Friday, October 1, 7-9PM: “What Is Christian Mysticism and Why Should I Care?” Throughout the Christian centuries people have experienced transformation and meaning through a profound relationship with God in Christ. Such persons have been called “mystics” and their teaching, “mysticism.” Can ancient spirituality still be relevant to Christians in the third millennium? Carl will trace the underlying stream of mysticism in the Christian tradition, reflecting on how this wisdom can strengthen our faith — and transform our lives — today. (Reception follows).

Saturday, October 2: 9:30 AM-4:00 PM: “Introduction To Contemplative Spirituality.” “Be still and know that I am God” (Ps. 46:10). The central gift of Christian spiritual practice is contemplative prayer, characterized by silence. Unlike meditation forms based on self-awareness, Christian contemplation emphasizes relationship — fostering a more intimate relationship with God. A morning talk on contemplation will include a response/dialogue with a panel. Guest panelists include:

Rocky Thomas is a pediatric nurse practitioner, a Roman Catholic laywoman, and a lay associate of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, Georgia. Rev. Dr. Stan Saunders is a Professor at Columbia Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. He holds a PhD in New Testament from Princeton University. Daphne Reiley is Director of Caregiver Spiritual Support at First Christian Church Decatur. She is a candidate for lay ministry ordination in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Georgia and holds Certification in Spiritual Formation from Columbia Seminary. Moderator: Rev. Phil Foster, LPC, Associate Minister for Spiritual Development, First Christian Church Atlanta.

The afternoon session will have small group interaction and shared contemplative practice. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing. Bring a Bible and notebook or journal. (Lunch is “on your own.” Book signing follows the afternoon workshop).

Sunday, October 3: 11 AM: World Communion Sunday Worship with the combined Contemporary, Traditional, and Zo Christian celebrants of FCCA. Special Guests: Rev. Dr. Ray Miles, Regional Minister, Christian Church (DOC) in Georgia; TBA.

2PM: Special Dance Presentation by Zo First Christian Church.
