Carson keynotes First Christian of Augusta’s 175th anniversary celebration

Dr. Glenn Carson, president of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society, will keynote the opening evening of worship during First Christian Church of Augusta’s celebration of its 175th anniversary in mid-January.

Dr. Carson will speak at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14. Invitations have been sent to other Stone-Campbell churches from the Augusta area, along with Disciples churches in Georgia and South Carolina. It is hoped that all of the Stone-Campbell movement’s three streams will gather under one roof to celebrate communion. Light refreshments will follow the evening’s service.

Other events that are scheduled:

  • Noon, Friday, Jan. 15: Judge and local historian Danny Craig will speak during a luncheon for the neighborhood and church.

  • 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16: The brass ensemble of the Fort Gordon Signal Corps Band will perform, with light refreshments to follow.

  • 11 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 17: The church will celebrate Homecoming. Highlights will include a video greeting from General Minister and President Sharon Watkins, and a commemoration of the ministry of Don Manning, who served the church for many years.

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Augusta was founded in 1835, meeting in the home of Edward and Margaret Campfield. The small congregation moved into a new sanctuary on Reynolds Street during the 1840s, and into the current facility at the intersection of Greene and Seventh streets in 1875. Philanthropist and business woman Emily Tubman bought the property and paid to build the church with its accompanying manse and lecture hall.
