Peachtree Christian Church in Midtown Atlanta
will host a concert at at 8:00 pm on March 16,
2010 in their wonderful sanctuary.
The
group is RedHot & Blue! In 1977, members from
one of Yale’s women’s a cappella groups joined
with members from one of Yale’s men’s groups and
formed the University’s first and oldest
co-educational a cappella group. They named the
group RedHot & Blue after a musical by Cole
Porter, an alumnus of the University. Since its
beginnings, RedHot has held true to its
tradition of a jazz repertoire—blending
traditional jazz music with the fresh and upbeat
flair of the collegiate a cappella tradition.
Currently, our repertoire consists of jazz
classics such as “Angel Eyes,” “Fly Me to the
Moon,” and “Sweet Blindness,” as well as
Gershwin’s “Summertime,” the old gospel classic
“Ride the Chariot,” and our new arrangement of
“Blackbird,” originally written by John Lennon
and Paul McCartney. Of course, we’re always in
the process of expanding and broadening our
repertoire, and in fact, right now, we’re
learning an arrangement of an old Jackson Five
classic—“ABC!” Currently, there are seventeen
members in the group, though the number
fluctuates slightly from year to year. Since our
debut, we have released twelve studio albums and
had the privilege to sing all over the world:
from Greece to San Francisco, even to the grand
rooms of the White House.
Exhaustive search bears
spiritual fruit for only the fifth time.
ATLANTA,
March 2010 – Peachtree Christian Church has a
new Senior Pastor for only the fifth time in the
85-year history of this well-known Atlanta
church. Dr. Barry McCarty was called
after an exhaustive two-year nationwide search
to replace Dr. James Collins, who retired in
2007. For Dr. McCarty, this will be something of
a homecoming because he is a native Atlantan,
grew up in East Point, GA, served other metro
churches and lectured at Atlanta Christian
College. He will be installed at the 11:00 a.m.
Worship Service on Sunday, March 7.
Among those welcoming Dr. McCarty
is Mrs. Idalene Jackson, 98, the only congregant
who has worshipped under all previous four
pastors at Peachtree. Mrs. Jackson’s late
husband, O.M. Jackson, was one of the founding
members, and she still attends weekly worship
services and Sunday School classes.
The
congregation selected
Dr. McCarty
for his superb Bible-based
preaching, visionary leadership, evangelistic
zeal, engaging personality, and his strong
emphasis on being an attentive shepherd. He has
a record of leadership in Christian churches in
Ohio, Georgia, and Texas. He is a published
author of three books, the former President of
Cincinnati Christian University, the official
parliamentarian of the Southern Baptist
Convention, and the regular preacher for the
“Christians’ Hour,” a weekly national and
international radio broadcast heard by over 5
million people around the world. His doctorate
in rhetoric and debate is from the University of
Pittsburgh. Dr. McCarty and his wife, Pat, who
has a background in Christian publishing, have
three grown sons.
“Fifteen
years from now, when Peachtree is celebrating
its 100th year, I hope to be here
too, celebrating my 50th year in
ministry,” said Dr. McCarty. |
