What is a “Requiem” and What is “Maundy Thursday”?

Centuries ago Christians throughout the world established the Thursday before Easter as Maundy Thursday to be a time to commemorate the beginning of Christ’s dark journey toward the cross and His death. Within a three-day time frame, the Lord Jesus Christ was betrayed, tried, and then unjustly crucified. He was placed in a tomb from which He emerged victorious.

On the first day of the three-day journey leading to His death, after sunset on Thursday (actually the early hours of Friday on the Jewish calendar) Jesus gathered His disciples at a table for supper – the last meal they would share together. It was then that He initiated the event that Christians observe as the “Lord’s Supper,” “Communion,” or “Eucharist.”

The observance of Maundy Thursday allows us to experience His agony in order to fully experience the joy of His resurrection on Easter. Many traditions have developed for this observance such as giving to the poor and ceremonially washing feet as Jesus washed His disciples’ feet. The word Maundy is derived from the Latin mandatum (mandate), the first word of Christ’s command to the disciples after He washed their feet, “A new commandment I give you…love one another as I have loved you”.

A Requiem is a musical composition of a mass for the dead. On Thursday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. the 40-member Cherry Log Christian Church Chancel Choir will sing a Requiem composed by John Rutter (1985) as an act of remembrance of Christ’s agony and death. The seven-movement Requiem is a combination of English and Latin. The fourth movement of the Rutter composition, Sanctus, will be replaced by the Sanctus from the Requiem composed by Faure. Meditations written by Dr. Fred Craddock, Minister Emeritus of Cherry Log Christian Church, will be read between each of the seven movements. The performance will be directed by Richard Lumpkin, choirmaster, and accompanied by Birdie Towle, pianist, and David Hauser on the oboe and English horn. The hand bell choir will also play during the service.

Rev. Bill Crowl, Interim Minister of Cherry Log Christian Church, will officiate. Communion will be observed and all present are invited to participate. Cherry Log Christian Church is located at 1149 Cherry Log Street in Cherry Log, GA off Hwy 515 (8 miles north of Ellijay; 7 miles south of Blue Ridge). There is no charge for the performance, and all are invited. For more information, contact the church office at 706-632-1048.
