Robert ĒBobĒ Grant, 2007 Disciple Men Layman of the Year

Sunday January 20, 2008, Bob Grant was awarded the Layman of the Year award by members of the Disciples Men's commission at First Christian Church of Griffin.  Attending for the Georgia CMF: John Anderson, Wil Perdue, Medie Still, Dan Anderson and Joe Kern.

Bob was born in 1952 in Lexington, KY.  His Disciples of Christ family heritage goes back to the beginning of our denomination.  His family was active in DOC churches and charter members of the Burnham Church in North Florida, so it was inevitable that he would be deeply involved in the denomination that he loves so much.

After attending Culver-Stockton College, Bob transferred to Transylvania University in Lexington for his bachelorís degree in music education.  He went to Eastern Kentucky University for his masterís degree, then the University of Kentucky for doctoral work.  Mary and Bob's son Rob has attended many menís retreats and is active in other regional church activities as well.  Besides being a very proud father, he is now a proud and happy father-in-law, too.  Rob and Kristin were married this fall at Epworth-By-The-Sea.

Becoming the choir director at Lafayette Christian Church, Bob met and married Mary Alverson.  In 1982 they moved to Griffin, Ga. to join his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Monroe C. Grant and take the choir directorís job at First Christian Church.

At the local church level, he has held the posts of board chair, treasurer, Deacon, Elder, served on countless committees, and has been devoted to teaching the ladies Sunday school class for nearly 25 years.  Bob has also worked in the Griffin community with the Boy Scouts and other volunteer organizations.

Bob became very involved with Disciple Menís work in the Georgia region, leading the group as president from 1993-1997.  As one of his favorite church duties, he has joyfully led the music for menís retreats and Regional Assemblies for many years, and Iím sure he looks forward to many more.  He and Greg Holmes canít break up the act yet!

Our 2007 Layman of the Year is a man led by the Holy Spirit and shows his faithfulness to his Church and his community.  He has been described as sincere, honest and hardworking in his church and community. He is an outstanding role model to young people and a refreshing example of what a Christian is in todayís world.
