Disciples Men Meet at Christmount

By Bill Thompson

The Rev. Michael Mooty, Senior Minister of Central Christian Church, Lexington, Kentucky and a former Moderator of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), was the keynote speaker at the Disciples Men’s retreat. He addressed the theme of the retreat, "Rebuild and Rejuvenate Men’s Ministry." Joe Kern, regional Men’s president presided at the retreat. Gerald Demarest, Minister at Guyton Christian Church, led vespers services. Charles Maddox, Layman of the year in 1999, gave the devotion on Friday night. Milton Summerall, coordinator for Disciples Men’s ministries in Georgia, assisted with the business session and video taping of the retreat events.  The 2000 Layman of the year was announced at the retreat – former Georgia moderator, Eddie Parker. Parker is currently interim minister of Victory Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky. In the business meeting, new officers were elected. They are Medie Still, President, Charles Maddox, President-Elect, Joe Kern, Past President, John Anderson, Secretary, and Gerald Demarest, Pastor/Counselor.

Rev. Mooty addressed the changes in culture and the challenges to the church of the 21st century. He encouraged the men to center on God as the critical issue for faith. He said that there is an emptiness in our culture that only God can fill. He added that we need to live theologically – live a faith that shapes the way we live.

At the business meeting, the men voted to use the Sunday offering to support its giving to Basic Mission Finance and to assist Guyton Christian Church with an upcoming mission trip. Fifty-one men plus several ladies attended this year’s retreat. The next Disciples Men’s retreat will be March 9-11, 2002, at Christmount.
