On Saturday, October 6, 2012, 27 Disciple Men attended the West Central District Disciples Men’s Rally at the First Christian Church of Griffin, Georgia. The registration was at 9:30 A.M., with coffee, juice, and pastries served by the women of the First Christian Church. The rally began at 10:00 A.M. with an opening prayer by Rev. Tom Van Laningham, minister of FCC, Griffin.

Greetings and announcements were made by Bob Grant, President, Georgia Disciples Men. He told of the upcoming events including Georgia Regional Assembly, to be held at FCC, Decatur, November 9-10; 2013 Georgia Region Men’s Retreat, to be held at Camp Christian Conference Center, April 12-13, 2013. He also reminded the men that a men’s breakfast will be held on Saturday morning, November 10 at 8:00 A.M. at the regional assembly. Also the Georgia Disciples Men’s Commission will meet on Saturday, November 10, at the conclusion of the Regional Assembly. He encouraged all churches to submit men’s names for the Lifetime Achievement Award, and for the 2012, Layman of the Year award. These applications are available on the Christian Church in Georgia’s website and the deadline is November 1, 2012.

Dr. Karen Frank-Plumlee, interim Regional Minister, Georgia Disciples, gave the regional report. She told of upcoming events in the region. She told of the Quilters’ Retreat to be held at Camp Christian on October 19-21, 2012. She gave a report of the Quilt project to raise money for Camp Christian. As of now 1251 quilt blocks were sold, for a total of $26,120.00. She also gave information of the 50th Anniversary Gala for Camp Christian, to be held at 11:00 A.M. on March 16, 2013 at the camp. Every church or individual is asked to donate an item or items for a silent and live auction to benefit the camp. She also gave information about the search for the next Regional Minister of Georgia. A search committee has been formed, and they will have five listening sessions for anybody in the region to attend, and make suggestions. We need to keep them on our prayer list.

A song service was led by Jimmy Walker, West Central District Men’s Representative, and Eileen Keene of Griffin accompanied on the piano.

Rev. Paul Appleby, Minister of Central Christian Church in Columbus, Georgia was the guest speaker. He spoke on the subject “Where Have All The Disciples Gone”. He gave us great statistics of how the Christian Churches have stayed about the same in membership, but have increased in giving. He also compared this to other denomination. He challenged each of us to help grow our churches. His message was terrific, and all of us thank him for a great message.

The benediction and blessing for lunch was given by Larry Conner, past “Layman of the Year” from FCC, Griffin.

The service ended in a friendship circle of all attending and singing “Bless Be the Tie That Binds”

A great lunch was served by the women of the FCC, Griffin. A great meal and fellowship was enjoyed by all that attended. A special thanks to the Disciples Men of Griffin for hosting this event, and for all of the men who gave of their time to attend. Hope to see all of you next year at the 2013, West Central District Men’s Rally. This rally has grown in attendance each year. It is a tribute to all of the Disciple men who are seeking God’s guidance.
