SUMMA Student Theological Debate Society

2020 Camp is July 21-29 at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee!

Camp is the cornerstone of SUMMA Student Theological Debate Society, which provides a way for high school students to build their faith through intellectual channels. Founded in the confidence that knowledge and reason are foundational to faith, SUMMA offers fun, friendship, and the opportunity for a deepened and more thoughtful faith.

Held on the campus of the School of Theology at the University of the South—one of the most beautiful college campuses in the United States—SUMMA Camp is a college-like atmosphere with challenging lectures and stimulating seminar discussions.

Camp is open to high school students entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2020, and offers a rich, uniquely meaningful experience, which includes:

  • Tools for thinking;

  • Knowledge of the Christian theological tradition;

  • Skills in public speaking and debate;

  • Cutting-edge engagement with topics such as religion and science,

          social ethics, and interfaith relations.

                                      (Click picture to open webpage)

Camp is not all work, though! Laughter is resonant in the classrooms and dorms, and there is plenty of time for soccer, basketball, games, movies, and even bowling. Each day begins and ends with prayer and contemplative reflection. “Speaking truth in love” is a practice followed throughout camp.

Our next camp session will be July 21–29, 2020. Applications are open and will run through June 1, 2020. Please read more about SUMMAcheck out our Facebook pagelook through our photos, and watch our videos

Nominate a camper! Do you know a high school student entering grades 9–12 in the Fall of 2020 who would be interested in attending SUMMA Camp? Follow this link or use this form to tell us about them!

Youth Rally Held in Sandy Springs!

On Sunday, November 3rd, over 80 youth from across the Region gathered at Sandy Springs Christian Church for our Fall Youth Rally. New and old friends met for an afternoon of games and worship.  We learned together what it means to be a community--to be a part of the Christian Church in Georgia-- and that we can always count on each other.  New relationships were formed as members of our Youth Activities Council met individually with the youth to tell them all about being on YAC and their favorite parts of Regional Youth Assembly. It was a wonderful afternoon of fellowship and faith. We can't wait to do it all again from February 21-23, 2020 at Regional Youth Assembly at Epworth by the Sea. See you there!

Youth Ministry in Georgia provides programming and support for both middle schoolers (Chi Rho) and high schoolers (CYF).

Youth Activities Council (YAC)

The Youth Activities Council (YAC) creates and implements youth ministries, including the annual youth assembly, and fosters and supports programs to develop the full potential of youth as they participate in the congregational, regional and general levels of the church. The council additionally helps to nurture connections between congregations sharing ideas and fostering cooperation on a variety of youth ministries across our region.

The Council is composed of adults and youth selected to represent their congregations in the planning and leading of Regional youth events of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Georgia. Youth representatives are selected by each congregation in the Region. The adults and youth serve as participants in the planning and implementing of regional youth ministries.

If your congregation does not yet have a YAC representative, but you would like to, please reach out to  the Regional Youth Directors (yac@gadisciples.org) and we would love to help you get involved! The youth application forms are linked below, and they may also give you a deeper understanding of our vision for YAC and its participants.

What Do You Need To Do As a Congregational Youth Group?

  1. Elect or appoint member(s) of your youth group to serve with YAC. This person must be a member of your congregation and may be in the eighth- eleventh grade at time of selection.

  2. Your YAC member(s) must submit the information form with your signature certifying their selection as your representative(s).

  3. They will serve on the council for one year and will be asked to participate in four planning retreats throughout the year.  We ask that they participate in at least 50% of these planned meetings and retreats in order to be a full part of this ministry.

  4. YAC members may apply multiple years back to back, if that is approved by your congregation, or you may elect new representatives each year.

  5. Please forward these forms to the Regional Office by February 1 each year so that all new members of YAC can be recognized at Worship on Sunday morning during Regional Youth Assembly at Epworth By the Sea.

  6. If you would like to suggest an adult to help facilitate the ministry of YAC please forward that name to Anna Strickland, Jackie Byrd, or Carrie Norris.

If you have any questions about YAC, you may direct them to Anna Strickland, Jackie Byrd, or Carrie Norris at YAC@gadisciples.org.
